“Why Should I Get A Dental Checkup Every Six Months?”

August 17, 2015

Regular dental checkups can save your children’s teeth. There’s a lot going on in your mouth right now. Various bacteria and other mouth-loving chemicals are moving up, down, over, and across your teeth. Some of these bacteria are washed away from your saliva, but other fragments can remain. Think of food particles. Every time you eat food the spaces between your teeth and other areas throughout your mouth are inundated with food particles that haven’t been properly digested. When these food particles stick around for too long they begin to rot. Rotting food isn’t good for your mouth – bacteria can flourish and eventually result in tooth decay, which can then lead to costly procedures and more time than you have spent at our dental office. There’s a lot you can do to keep your mouth in excellent health, including brushing and flossing twice a day. Unfortunately, doing these tasks alone won’t keep your mouth totally clean, but it certainly does help. The rest can be taken care of by us. A dental checkup helps keep us in the loop as far as your oral health is concerned. We’re your extra set of eyes for things you can’t see in your mouth. We’ll clean and polish your teeth while keeping an eye out of possible disease or cavity development. The dentists Oklahoma City, OK trusts are right here in our office.

Link Between Depression and Poor Dental Health Revealed

March 16, 2015

492500957Avoiding care due to the fear of going to the dentist ultimately results in dental problems. A recently study conducted by Deakin University researchers discovered a link between depression and poor dental health. Dr. Colin Holman and Dr. Natalie Frazier at Dental Expressions in Oklahoma City, OK are on a mission to provide a full range of services while reducing patient anxiety in a comfortable and friendly environment.

Researchers “… found almost two thirds of participants reporting depression (61 per cent) also reported having an aching mouth in the past year and more than half (57.4 per cent) considered their teeth to be in fair or poor condition.” In addition, it was noted that “… the more dental conditions one had the greater the severity of their depression.”

Whiter Teeth Impacts First Impressions

According to the “The Impact of Whiter Teeth on Key First Impressions” study, commissioned by Crest Whitestrips, improving the overall appearance of teeth influences how other people view you. “Dr. Dacher Keltner, smile psychologist and Professor of Psychology at University of California at Berkeley [reports], ‘Visible from 200 feet, it is the intense focus of what other people look at, and a sign of our warmth, confidence, and health.’ ”

Dr. Holman and Dr. Frazier are positioned to help their patients achieve overall oral health. While preventative dental care keeps ahead of any issues, they also offer cosmetic dentistry:

  • professional-grade teeth whitening (in-office whitening and custom-fitted trays for home use),
  • porcelain veneers (to correct awkward spacing or gaps between teeth, chips and cracks, stains that don’t respond to teeth whitening and misaligned or misshapen teeth), and
  • cosmetic bonding (a tooth-colored resin applied to the tooth).

Lifelike Dentures for a Beautifully Restored Smile in Oklahoma City, OK

February 16, 2015

494375087Replacing missing teeth is of great importance for a variety of reasons, including improving your ability to eat and speak properly. At Dental Expressions in Oklahoma City, OK, Dr. Colin Holman and Dr. Natalie Frazier offer a wide range of restorative dentistry options to help reconstruct your dentition, including conventional dentures and implant-supported dentures.

Are Dentures Right for Me?

When most people think of dentures, the image of a full set of false teeth is typically the first thing that comes to mind. These are called complete dentures, and they effectively take the place of an entire arch of missing teeth. At Dental Expressions, we will ensure that your complete dentures look natural and feel comfortable so that you can once again fully enjoy eating, speaking, and smiling with a full set of teeth.

Partial dentures also replace missing teeth, though they differ from conventional dentures in that they replace only a few teeth rather than an entire arch. The custom-crafted prosthetic teeth are color-matched to your existing dentition for the most natural look possible. Partial dentures not only replace missing teeth for improved function and aesthetics; they also help prevent other teeth from shifting.

A consultation with the team at Dental Expressions will aid in determining which type of dentures are right for you. We’ll take the time to sit down with you and discuss all available options to ensure that we find the ideal solution for your unique situation. If you are interested in implant-retained dentures, we’ll explain the dental implant process and develop a treatment plan that best suits your individual needs.

Care for Your Little One’s Smile with Gentle Children’s Dentistry in Oklahoma City, OK

December 16, 2014

478248949Your child’s smile lights up your world every day; though it is no doubt as beautiful as it is cherished, is it healthy as well? Believe it or not, those little pearly whites need just as much attention from the dentist as adult teeth do. At Dental Expressions in Oklahoma City, OK, Dr. Holman and Dr. Frazier offer a comprehensive range of general and family dental solutions, including children’s dentistry.

The Importance of Children’s Dentistry

Tooth decay is the single most prevalent childhood disease in America; in fact, it is four times more common than early childhood obesity and 20 times more common than diabetes. Cavities, also known as dental caries, are caused by the acid-producing bacteria that accumulate on teeth and beneath the gum line. While brushing and flossing at home are certainly integral parts of any healthy oral hygiene routine, the only way to fully control plaque and bacteria is to visit the dentist at least once every six months beginning around the age of three or four. You may wish to bring your child to our office prior to this age, particularly if you notice anything out of the ordinary or have cause for concern. As always, our team is here for you and your family, standing by to answer any questions you may have about your little one’s smile.

During a routine checkup, our doctors and staff will closely examine each surface of your child’s teeth, inspecting even between teeth to rule out the existence of damaging cavities or symptoms of gum disease. We will perform a thorough cleaning as well, offering helpful homecare tips so you can maintain your child’s smile properly between visits. Our doctors may suggest fluoride treatments to fortify your son or daughter’s vulnerable enamel and sealants to help ward off tooth decay. With children’s dentistry at our family-friendly office, you’ll find everything you need to keep those precious little smiles looking and feeling their absolute best.

What Cosmetic Dental Problems Can Porcelain Veneers Fix?

  • Crooked teeth
  • Discolored teeth

How Are Porcelain Veneers Placed?

  • Step 1: Your tooth enamel is trimmed back about the same thickness as the veneer.
  • Step 2: The dentist will use a shade guide to determine which color of porcelain most closely matches your surrounding teeth.
  • Step 3: Then the dentist will take an impression of your tooth and its surrounding teeth and gums to fabricate the veneer.
  • Step 4: A temporary veneer will be placed until your permanent veneer is ready.
  • Step 5: Your permanent veneer will be bonded creating your brand new smile.

What Are the Advantages of Porcelain Veneers?

  • Natural Appearance –Porcelain is a ceramic material that has many similar properties to your tooth’s natural enamel.
  • Stain-Resistance – Porcelain also has an extremely smooth and impervious surface.  This makes porcelain veneers quite resistant to permanent stains.
  • Long Lasting Porcelain veneers typically last over 15 years.
